چکیده

Bass Strait is an area of shallow continental shelf located between Victoria and Tasmania connecting the south-east Indian Ocean with the Tasman Sea (Figure 1). The region supports a diverse marine ecosystem with a wide range of habitats. The submerged temperate rocky reefs and canyons contain high species biodiversity with a large proportion being endemic to the area [3]. Marine activities of environmental significance include fisheries, shipping, oil drilling/processing and coastal riverine discharges. All are potential sources of pollutants and contaminants. In winter and to a large degree in spring, strait waters are well mixed with little or no apparent stratification [1], [6] [14]. In the passages strong vertical and horizontal

Chemical defense: aquatic beetle (Dineutes hornii) vs. fish (Micropterus salmoides).

Captive largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) reject the gyrinid beetle, Dineutes hornii. They also reject edible items (mealworms) treated by topical addition of the norsesquiterpene gyrinidal, the principal component of the defensive secretion of the beetle. The bass' oral tolerance of gyrinidal varies broadly as a function of the gyrinidal dosage and the state of satiation of the fish. Whe...

A Survey of the Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz in the Middle East, with an Emphasis on Iran's Role in Maintaining its Security

The Middle East has always been of interest to other countries for its geopolitical position and its vast supply of oil and gas. Meanwhile, the issue of the transfer of oil by sea is of great importance. The Strait of Hormuz is perhaps one of the most important blue-water in the world due to the geographical location of the Persian Gulf to the Free Seas. The world's superpowers, like the United...

Stratification and Double-Diffusive Convection in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait during Winter Monsoon

Investigation of stratification in marine environments is always considered by researchers. In this study double-diffusive convection and stratification in the Bab el Mandeb strait is investigated by analyzing of field data. Measurement of seawater temperature and salinity from ARGO project (2009 to2014) and also R-V Knorr (2001) cruise with the daily average of seawater temperature and salinit...

The Australian millipede Dicranogonus pix Jeekel, 1982 (Diplopoda, Polydesmida, Paradoxosomatidae): a species with and without paranota

Dicranogonuspix Jeekel, 1982 occurs in Victoria and Tasmania, Australia, including the islands in eastern Bass Strait between the two States. There is only slight gonopod variation across this range, but Dicranogonuspix populations with and without paranota are separated in Bass Strait by the ca 50 km-wide gap between the Kent and Furneaux Groups of islands.

Model study reservoir flushing

Sediment flushing of reservoirs is an operational technique, whereby previously accumulated sediments in the reservoirs are hydraulically removed by accelerated flow when the bottom desiltingoutlets of the dam are opened. In this research, the process of sediment flushing is simulated by a three dimensional numerical model in which sediment and flow interaction are reflected in the reservoirs. ...
